Lesson-Planning Strategy: Giving the Teachers and the Community a Voice in Strategic Planning

Learn why an inclusive planning process is helping reimagine the education of an entire region with Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

During the past year, we’ve been working with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District on the development of a new 5-year plan for 2020-2025. It’s been an extensive process with one of our long-standing clients as we work through the end-to-end planning process. It’s included everything from community and staff engagement surveys, small group workshops, and principal-teacher feedback sessions to provide a voice to the educators on the ground.

While we’re still working on finalizing the plan and working through the feedback, what stood out to our team is the power of unifying the voice of the community. Everyone from teachers, the community, principals, and administrative staff had input on what the focus areas of the plan needed to be. And while a bottom-up planning process is one that takes a little more time and consideration to complete, the end-result is a plan that resonates with the entire organization.

The conversation between department directors and principals has created an ideal working relationship, planning process, and cross-department dialogue. The principals have become much more involved than ever before – a change Fairbanks has welcomed with open arms!

The result is a plan with focused energy and a focused process to redesign the career and technical education program for Fairbanks – an impact that will be felt for generations to come. Nice work!
